3D Mammography

3D Mammography for Breast Screening and Diagnostic Assessment

Luma Women's Imaging Centre provides 3D mammography, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), for breast screening and diagnostic assessment.

By capturing images of the breast from multiple angles and reconstructing them into thin image sections, 3D mammography helps radiologists evaluate breast tissue and assess abnormalities that may be obscured by overlapping tissue on conventional 2D images.

For referring doctors and specialists, 3D mammography forms part of Luma's breast imaging services, supporting the assessment of breast findings and decisions on further investigation where clinically indicated.

How Does 3D Mammography Help Assess Breast Abnormalities?

In conventional 2D mammography, overlapping breast tissue can sometimes obscure abnormalities. 3D mammography allows radiologists to examine thin sections of breast tissue, helping reduce this overlap and improve the visibility of certain findings.

This may be particularly useful for women with dense breasts, where fibrous and glandular tissue can make abnormalities more difficult to detect. However, 3D mammography does not detect every breast cancer, and additional imaging may be considered based on breast density, clinical findings and individual risk factors.

What is 3D mammography used for

When Is 3D Mammography Used?

3D mammography may be used in different clinical settings:

  • Breast cancer screening: For individuals without breast symptoms, according to applicable screening recommendations.

  • Diagnostic assessment: To investigate breast symptoms or abnormalities identified on clinical examination or previous imaging.

  • Further evaluation of breast findings: To help characterise abnormalities and guide decisions on whether additional imaging or image-guided biopsy is required.

The appropriate imaging approach depends on the clinical indication and individual circumstances.

When Should You Have a Screening Mammogram?

Breast cancer screening recommendations in Singapore depend on age and individual risk. Refer to the latest Singapore Ministry of Health screening recommendations for current guidance.

Screening mammography is intended for people without breast symptoms. If you notice a breast lump, nipple discharge or other new breast changes, consult a breast specialist for assessment rather than relying on a routine screening appointment.

What to Expect During Your 3D Mammogram

Watch our video to learn how how 3D mammography works, how it differs from conventional 2D mammography, and what to expect during the examination.

During the examination, our radiographer will position each breast on the mammography machine and gently compress it to obtain clear images. You may feel some pressure or temporary discomfort.

The machine captures images from different angles as it moves in an arc around the breast. The process is then repeated on the other breast, with our radiographer guiding you through each step.
